In the early stages of planning a trip to Portugal next year, and I'd love to get some suggestions from seasoned travelers! I'm thinking of a mixed travel approach, using public transportation for some parts and renting a Ford Ranger to explore off-road destinations.

Speaking of off-road adventures, has anyone conquered some epic trails they'd recommend for a first-timer like myself? Would hiring a guide be advisable to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience while navigating these landscapes? Madeira, the Algarve, and Sintra seem to be popular choices for scenic off-roading.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Idk anything about off-road there, but the Sintra castles are a must see and public transportation gets you there and everywhere in Portugal easily.

Water is cold, but beaches are beautiful. Lisbon is a fun town of you're out at night, the Barrio(?) district was cool.

I appreciate the insights on Sintra's castles being a must-see experience in Portugal. It's comforting to know that public transportation offers convenient access to these historical sites and other attractions throughout the country.

@COblue, may I ask during which month you visited Portugal? I am thinking of going there in September next year; do you think the water is still cold around that time? The lively nightlife of Lisbon's Bairro Alto district really makes this city more fascinating. On the first night, I will start my adventure in Bairro Alto with a local guide from https://gowithguide.com/portugal/lisbon then I'll explore on my own for the following evenings.

I was there at the beginning of Aug and the water was cold, but there's enough to do in the Algarve to make up for it.

One of my favorite trips, hopefully the same for you!

Exploring the Algarve region despite the cold water is a testament to the diverse attractions and activities it offers. I see that the temperature range in August is just about the same in September. I'm delighted to hear that you had a fulfilling trip with many enjoyable experiences. Autumn is often recommended as an excellent time for wine enthusiasts to explore, aligning with the grape harvest season. This period presents a wonderful opportunity to partake in hiking, connect with nature, and relish the pleasant weather conditions. Your positive experience shared is truly appreciated, and I eagerly anticipate crafting my own unforgettable adventures in Portugal!
