Ford Ranger Takes Center Stage in New Zealand as Government Feebate Scheme Announced

Following a new sales record in July, the Ford Ranger is comfortably back on top in New Zealand
With an increase in supply coming through in quarter two, the Ford Ranger has reclaimed its status as the number one selling new vehicle in New Zealand. In July the Ranger set an all-time record for monthly sales and along with strong Transit sales has propelled Ford back into the leadership position for the Light Commercial segment in New Zealand.
“As with a lot of markets, it’s been an extremely challenging year but we’re glad to be firmly back in the leadership position with the Ranger as the number one new vehicle in New Zealand and Ford as the number one light commercial brand,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director Ford New Zealand.
Adding to what was already off the charts demand for the Ford Ranger, the New Zealand government announced a new ‘Feebate’ scheme in early June. With heavy fees kicking in on 1 January 2022, dealerships have already seen an additional surge in demand with many customers looking to pull forward their purchases accordingly.
The Feebate scheme began July 1 with rebates offered for EVs and PHEVs vehicle purchases. From January 1, 2022 vehicles that emit over a new government mandated standard of C02 will be charged a fee according to the level the vehicle exceeds it.
With the popularity of the Ford Ranger in New Zealand, the vehicle has been very much in the spotlight when it comes to news around the government’s Feebate scheme. It was certainly a hot topic among at the NZ National Fieldays event in mid-June with many people angry and frustrated at the idea of having to pay an extra fee for a vehicle that is a required tool for work. At the moment there are no EV or PHEV alternatives that provide the same capability that the Ranger provides for thousands of New Zealanders.
On the rebate side and also in light of the government’s announcement, Ford NZ brought forward the ordering process for the All New Ford Escape PHEV, opening the order bank at Fieldays. The All New Ford Escape PHEV arrives in New Zealand in limited quantities late in quarter four.
“We are working with our dealers, customers, the government and the industry to help get the right information out about the scheme. At the moment, people on all sides are trying to get their heads around what the rebates and what the various levels of fees might be and how it’s all going to work in reality,” said Simon Rutherford. “With the lower emissions of the 2.0 Litre Bi Turbo in the Ranger, for example, there is an enormous opportunity to highlight to customers that it’s a very good solution that may incur a minimal fee.”
