My wife and I have for quite a while wanted to drive the length of North Carolina staying off interstates. This past week we did it. We left Granite Falls heading west for Murphy via the Blue Ridge Parkway. We drove up to Mt. Mitchell, highest peak east of the. Mississippi, 6,684 ft. We also passed the highest peak on the Blue Ridge Parkway, 6,053 ft. After making our way to Murphy, we headed east to Manteo. I use Manteo because it’s the easternmost “M” town. We actually stayed a couple nights in Nags Head on the Outer Banks.
While on the Outer Banks we drove up to Carova which is accessible by 11 miles of beach driving after Hwy 12 ends in Corolla. In Carova we got to see the wild horses that live there, descending from Spanish Mustangs.
Along the way we saw a young black bear, several deer (a doe with twins!), turtles of course the horses. Went climbing on a huge sand dune, Jockey’s Ridge. Saw a full scale replica of a Confederate era ironclad. Visited the Wright Brothers museum. Drove to the VA line on the beach, couldn’t go further because of a fence to keep the horses in. Saw a few lighthouses.
Really impressed with the truck, basically stock other than Eibach Pro-Truck sport shocks front and rear. Final mileage drive was just shy of 1,500. Comfortable ride, good gas mileage and really impressive in sand that ranged from hard pack to super soft.
Last pic is the basic route we drove.
