So I am looking at a new project where I use a camping trunk and converting into a box for a portable air conditioner for when I am at camp sites with electrical hook ups. What I am finding is most of the micro kits are in the range of $1,000 - but I could go down the road right now and buy just a full blown portable inside A/C, which has more strength and run the hose out a tent vent, for $300.

Why in the world do the bare bones components cost so much more than a fully assembled unit? This is a bit of oddity to me because most of my hobbies involve fabricating things due to being much cheaper than off the shelf purchasing.

Cliff Notes: Sleeping in Georgia humid heat sucks ass - I want some damn AC.
