Like many of you I am concerned about soot building up in the engine, mostly on the back of the valves, pistons etc. I may have a solution that I think is working for me and its simple. My tail pipe use to be somewhat sooty or black chalk like. I used Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and injection cleaner in my last car every three or four thousand miles and thought it worked very well. I don't hot rod my truck much (just once in a wile), but it steps out when I ask it to. Due to the turbo, I called Lucas and asked them about using it in the Ranger. They said no problem, won't hurt a thing, use it as often as you like it won't harm anything. So I added it every thousand miles and it was fine. Eventually my tail pipe started to look less sooty, so I used it more often, it steadily became cleaner. Now I add it to about every other tank of gas, no ill effects in 11,000 miles that I can tell.
It comes in little 5.25oz bottles $4.47 each, 1 quart bottle for about $10.00 each or 1 gallons bottles for about $26.00 each (all at Walmart). If you want to try it get 2 small bottles and a quart bottle. Refill the little bottles from the quart bottle and save some money, each refill will only cost you $1.66 instead of $4.47. I buy the gallon bottle which refills 24 little bottles and my refills cost about $1.10 each. The gas mileage has increased about 1 mile (city) or 2 (hi way) a gallon, not all that impressive but it pretty muck pays for itself.

Since our engines are GDI engines, I don't see how this would help clean the valves at all. Maybe the pistons to a degree.

Im no mechanic for sure. My thinking was, the fact that it is burning so clean the turbo fins are probably cleaner and hopefully the blowby is not very sooty which would also help.

I don't think I'm wasting money. My gas mileage went up enough to cover the cost of the Lucas cleaner.
