Ford's Ranger ousts Jeep's Cherokee as the most American car you can buy.
Ford

Modern vehicles are incredibly complicated and made from thousands of different parts from different suppliers around the world. Beyond that, even companies based here in the US often manufacture cars in Mexico or Canada for various reasons. So, how do you go about picking a car if buying one that contributes the most to our economy matters to you?

That's what the Cars.com American-Made Index (AMI) is for. This annual study, now in its 15th year of publication, looks at several factors that determine how beneficial a vehicle is to America's bottom line. This index looks specifically at assembly location, parts sourcing as defined by the American Automobile Labeling Act, US factory employment relative to vehicle production, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing.

So what tops the 2020 list? Somewhat unsurprisingly, it's a Ford truck, though in this case, it's maybe not the one that springs to mind at first. It's actually the recently reintroduced Ford Ranger midsize pickup, which is built in the small Michigan suburb of Wayne at the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant, formerly known as the Michigan Truck Plant.

The Ranger's engine -- that's the 2.3-liter EcoBoost for those of you playing at home -- was once produced exclusively in Valencia, Spain, but it's since been moved to Ford's Cleveland Engine Plant in Ohio, likely pushing the fourth-gen Ranger into the top spot.

Jeep Cherokee
Second on the list is the Jeep Cherokee, which is built in Belvidere, Illinois at the creatively named Belvidere Assembly Plant. The KL-generation Cherokee has been that facility's sole product since 2017.

Tesla Model S and Model 3
The third and fourth entries come from a state that's not typically thought of as a big automobile producer but is becoming increasingly important as electric and autonomous vehicle developments proceed. The Tesla Model S and Model 3 (in third and fourth place, respectively) are not only designed and built in America but so are their battery packs.

The Model S is assembled exclusively at Tesla's Fremont, California factory, and most of the world's supply of Model 3 is, too. China has its own Tesla factory near Shanghai, which we've covered at length, but that is currently only producing Chinese-market new-energy vehicles.

Honda Odyssey, Ridgeline and Passport
Numbers 5, 6 and 7 on the list all come from the same manufacturer in the same plant. It's Honda, and the vehicles are the Odyssey, the Ridgeline and the Passport, in that order. The plant is in Lincoln, Alabama and employs somewhere around 4,000 workers. It also served as the home of V6 Accord production for a few years, until that got moved back to the Marysville, Ohio plant.

That a foreign carmaker ranks so highly on the American Made Index shouldn't be surprising -- Honda has been in the top three for the last two years running. The cost of import tariffs, combined with shipping costs and a lack of desirability of certain models in other global markets (Europe doesn't buy as many large trucks, for example) means that basing production of vehicles like trucks and SUVs in the US makes a ton of financial sense.

Rounding out the top 10 are the Chevrolet Corvette from Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Tesla Model X from Fremont, California and the Chevrolet Colorado from GM's Wentzville, Missouri plant.

They must have dropped the R&D component at some point for the Cherokee to be so high. My daughter drives a 2014 Cherokee and it was much lower that year due to the use of the Fiat platform.

Here's another study saying the Ranger has 85% domestic content. Nicely done Ford.:like:

Ford Ranger tops 'made in America' index
Ford Motor Co.'s Ranger mid-size pick-up truck is the most "made in America" vehicle in 2020 with 85% total domestic content, according to an index produced by American University's Kogod School of Business.

U.S. automakers, including Tesla Inc., dominated the top 10 of the list that takes into account the company's headquarters and where research and development is conducted. "Made in America" is a slogan that both President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden have touted along the campaign trail, promising to increase U.S. manufacturing jobs.

The Ranger replaces the automatic transmission version of the Chevrolet Corvette and the discontinued Chevy Volt in the top spot. Introduced last year after an eight-year hiatus with 61% total domestic content, this year’s Ranger now holds a U.S.-sourced engine and gets 70% of its parts from U.S. and Canada, up from 50%.

Overall, General Motors Co. has the highest domestic content score with 70.6% for U.S.-assembled vehicles — up from 70% last year — and 58.2% for all of its vehicles. Ford's domestic content was down to 67.6% from 70% for U.S.-produced vehicles compared to 55% for all. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV was nearly flat with 64.1% domestic content for U.S.-assembled vehicles and 55% for all.

Honda Motor Company Ltd.'s 62.6% total domestic content for vehicles assembled in the United States was the highest among foreign automakers. Volvo Cars' was the lowest with 30%.

Total domestic content for individual automakers is not available before 2019, but the highest domestic content was 90% in 2016 prior to Trump's election for the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.

After the Ranger, the automatic transmission model of the Chevrolet Camaro was the second-most made in America vehicle in 2020 with 83% domestic content sourcing. The Corvette as well as the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups tied for third with 82% domestic content. The Jeep Cherokee Latitude and Trailhawk SUVs were fourth with 78.5% domestic content.

The rest of the top 10 finishes as follows:

  • Tied for fifth with 77.5% domestic content: Three-liter Ford Explorer, Cadillac CT4 and CT5, and Tesla Model S and Y
  • Sixth with 77% domestic content: Cadillac XT4
  • Tied for seventh with 76% domestic content: Chevrolet Camaro with manual transmission, Caddilac XT5 and XT6, and GMC Acadia
  • Tied for eighth with 75.5% domestic content: Ford Expedition and Mustang with a 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine and 5.0-liter engine with automatic transmission
  • Tied for ninth with 75% domestic content: Five-liter Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, long-range Tesla Model 3, and Tesla Model X
  • Tenth with 74.5% domestic content: Jeep Cherokee

Its great that Ranger made the number one for content, what I have always said, take the F-150 for example, sure its what 76% content, but, they sell more units that anyone, so what would you rather have 100% x 10 units sold or 76% percent with a 1,000,000 units sold, personally I'll take that latter. When looked at it through those eyes, Ford has been #1 for much longer than advertised.

Well that's awesome to hear. I try to buy American made when possible. What is funny is that the Honda Pilot is basically the same vehicle as the Ridgeline and Passport but no mention of that in the Honda section. Oh well.

My how things change in a year - from this article with the 2021 list: https://kogod.american.edu/autoindex/2021
The Ford Ranger, which was no. 1 in 2020, dropped to no. 16 due to a reduction in US/Canadian content from 70 percent to 45 percent.
Interestingly enough, Ford still holds the top spot:
In the top spot with 88.5 percent domestic content is the manual transmission-equipped Ford Mustang 5.0 liter GT.

Not quite true, RHD Tesla 3's used in Australia come from the Shanghai plant, and probably all the RHD markets in Asia as well.

Technically anything made in Canada or Mexico is still made in North America. They should have said USA.
