The 62 grain Green Tip M855/SS109 Penetrator: Supposedly, it has a steel core at its tip that makes it great for intermediate-barriers (think car doors, drywall, lighter body armor, etc.). People seem to like to stock up on it and use it for both range (poking holes in paper) and carry/self-defense/home-defense.

When I was a Sheriff's Deputy, we carried 55 grain V-Max (polymer ballistic tip) ammunition in our patrol rifles. The idea was we wanted less of an intermediate-barrier defeating projectile just in case we were deploying our rifles in a residential/business setting. In other words, don't want to shoot through a wall and hit another person in the next room.

I'm pretty sure some of our SWAT guys were issued the M855 and/or Hornady TAP 62 grain for deploying against vehicles and such.

I'd say you can't go wrong with the Green Tip, but you are paying a premium for it. SO you would have to take into consideration how you want to use it!
Green tip is practically the worst defensive round. Military rounds aren't always the best cause of the Geneva Convention. There are a couple good ones still around, Speer used to make 55gr gold dots. Lehigh 55gr controlled chaos is probably the best, barrier blind equivalent to those. Other rounds like the Black Hills, 50gr and 77gr aren't barrier blind.

For defensive purposes, most would be better off with Hornady 73gr FTX in the Critical Defense line, especially if using shorter barrels. FMJ bullet construction (open lead base), while the media likes to overstate it's effectiveness, is less accurate and less damaging to soft tissue. Enclosed-based bullet construction is consistently more accurate and depending on how the tip is constructed/enclosed it can be far more effective on soft tissue. For pistols, this is how jacketed hollow points are made. For rifles, this is how we make match-tip hollow points, ballistic-tipped rounds, and hybrids like the FTX bullet.

Shoot FMJ stuff for bulk use practice, but don't limit yourself to the "mil-spec" our military is limited by.

What those guys said above this reply. I'll take my 55 grain V-max!!!
As an added benefit, the 55gr VMax does an excellent job of making coyotes play dead!

so after almost buying a lever action and finding it was a scam i impulse bought a turkish contraption. it was on sale. but the one on sale came with black plastic furniture or so i thought. once it showed up i tried to find other furniture with decent wood to give it a traditional feel but the parts for it are no place. realized if it ever needed a part id likely have a cool paper weight .
i may take another shot at the wood work in the future. for now its better than the black spray paint lol. who paints over decent walnut - the turks..

I'm really excited about this! I finished up that old Rohm RG31 Saturday Night Special revolver I was working on. Was it worth the effort or price? Probably not financially, but I had a good time doing it and I love the results. I'll keep it as an occasional range toy and it'll probably be relegated to bad-wildlife duty with CCI .38SP Shotshells.

I had previously fully disassembled this thing, lost an important spring, deep cleaned it, refinished the Zamak parts, and sourced new grips for it. This weekend I re-blued the cylinder and the screws, cleaned up the forcing cone on the barrel, and got it all reassembled. She's tight! And the action is timed nicely.
