For whatever reason I’ve always felt really comfortable shooting 45s vs 9mm. Maybe it because the guns are a bit heavier or the type of ammo I was using, but shooting 45s always felt effortless. I shoot 9mm a bit but grew up shorting a 1911 so maybe that’s why. I e shot 40 a few times and it felt pretty similar to a 45.
Same here, .45s seems natural in my hand and stance. I don't have to do lots of adjusting to shoot. I have 9mm as well and always had to adjust my stance. I guess owning a gun or rifle is like a baseball bat or golf club where you have to tuned to the right weight, length and balance.

True, what’s the saying by Jeff Cooper, beware of the man with one gun? They’re all slightly different, and since handguns are a-lot harder to get good with vs rifles, feel, weight, caliber, grip all probably come into play. I also really love shooting .38 out of a heavier framed .357. Just such a good feel to it. Not that I mind shooting .357, but some combos are really a joy to shoot. For instance, I love my 303 enfield, but that’s not one I will shoot all day.

Do you believe that is because of the caliber, or because of the firearm that caliber is in?

The reason I say that...many automatically associate .45 with 1911's and 9mm with Glocks, which have two different grip angles and dramatically different feels as firearms. I would venture to bet that if I put a 9mm 1911 in someone's hands who says they like .45's because of how they fee, they would love the 9mm 1911 just as much.

Shot the 1911-45 yesterday morning then switched over to the Glock 34-9mm........took a few rds of 9mm to get used to the different grip.

Very well could be. I really like the 1911 frame of guns. They fit great in my hands. I don’t have any smaller 9mm, a smaller everyday carry will be my next gun so I’m taking recommendations but glocks feel ok but I haven’t shot with them enough to really tell. My full sized SIG m17 feels great to hold but on that one I’m still learning their combat pictures sighting system. I think for most full sized men, full sized guns will be easier to shoot and more accurate than say a really small cc gun.

Sounds like you just prefer the stability of a heavier gun.

There are a lot of full sized, heavier 9mms out there. If the only 9mm you've shot is a polymer frame that might be the difference.

For example the p226 I just bought weighs 10 ounces more than a Glock 19X Gen 5. And it shows in the shooting.

Also, as the good Doc said, if one's only 9mm experience is a Glock, it's definitely the gun. You're either a Glock guy or you aren't. I am not. The grip angle feels like your watering a garden, not shooting a gun

Have a Glock 26........sub-compact........one night at friday night IDPA local LEO challenged me to do the Police Qual with my 26. Took all shots to the head at all distances and time. He bought the beer afterwards! Sub-compacts are just as accurate in the right hands with practice!

Yeah very true. Good points. I enjoy the heavier framed s&w older revolvers as well (newer one felt much lighter and not made as beefy but I have only tested a couple). My next gun will probably be something smaller I can carry, probably another 9mm since the ammo is cheaper and I can afford to practice with it and the mrs may want to shoot it too. Ive been practicing a lot with the SW22 victory which is a really nice bull barrel target 22 and fun to shoot. Cheap ammo tends to stovepipe a bit.

If you like the feel of the 1911, look into smaller bobtail commander length 9mm 1911's and you might find something you absolutely love to carry.

I shoot 2011's (double stack 1911) in competition and absolutely love them, but I carry a Glock 43 most of the time and need some dryfire once in awhile to make sure everything is still right with the world.

Yeah they definitely are in the right hands. Between my eyesight and shakiness I’ll always choose the sights a bit further apart lol. But that’ll be my next gun so I’ll have to get better ?

Poor eyesight and the shakes requires a shotgun with full choke! LOL

That’s the one thing is dislike with my SW22. Can’t dryfire without snap caps or you’ll bigger up the breach face. The Mark IVs you can dry fire. I had one but sold it. The sights were drilled so far off from the factory that you had to adjust the rear as far over as it would go to get it to shoot straight. I sent it in to smith and Wesson and they sent it back with the rear sight adjusted all the way over. I’ll look into that commander. Sounds right up my alley.

I'll second the Doc again.

Another one to consider might be the Sig Sauer P938. SAO 1911 style minus the grip safety, more compact than most commander 1911s, metal framed, and extended mags can provide a full grip if your fingers are on the skinnier side.

Here's my p238, the .380 version 9mm is same size, in my hand for idea of their size.

I love my little mouse gun. It shoots like an extension of my hand.
