I’m thinking the squeal is coming from the rear end, or a wheel bearing. It starts when I hit 30mph or so and it comes and goes. Sometimes loud, sometimes soft, sometimes nothing at all…..

HI Bubba,

If it is indeed coming from the rear....It would be consistent with a ring and pinon noise generated by the the application of power or lack of power from the engine via the throttle pedal. So here is the terminology. Power, Float and Coast. Power is throttle applying power from the engine...Float is subtle power/coast to maintain a constant speed and coast is off throttle. Now if you were a ring and pinion in the rear axle, your teeth would be on the power side upon the application of power. Coast is on the back side of the ring gear teeth. Float is sort of like a chatter...some power and some coast in rapid order.

So here is your test. What are you doing when noise is the loudest. What when quiet and what when it is less noticable? I suspect your rear gear. However, it is likely not pending doom... The dealer needs to analyze the gear pattern and make some tiny adjustments if a rear gear noise problem...

Btw...Drive and Power are used interchangeably. Drive/Coast/Float

Phil thank you - this noise just started today on my Ranger. We are a couple of thousand miles from home. Would you anticipate driving with a rear gear this way would cause additional damage? Thanks
