I decided to construct a shelf to create a continuous flat surface over the wheel wells to allow transportation of drywall without fear of it splitting down the middle. It has a vertical plywood piece along the cab wall for rigidity and it is held in place by a bungee cord connecting to the tie downs at both ends. I then decided to give it an upgrade and cut in some pvc pipes on a 45 degree angle to create rod holders. I've got 3 rod holders installed so far with room for at least one more if I needed to add another. Lastly I spray painted it black to blend in with the bed liner. I just wanted to share this since it was a pretty quick and easy project that really improved the utility of the truck. It's also easily removable when not needed. Let me know your thoughts and if anyone else has come up with some other solutions to the drywall transportation issue with these midsize trucks.

I keep the tailgate closed and rest the back end of the drywall on top of the tailgate. It sticks out a bit but I just limit my speed to 45 max and it hasn't been an issue. Not sure how fast I can go without the drywall snapping. Don't really want to test it, lol.

Nice. I like the double duty that it does for the fishing rods. I built this one for hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood and drywall:

I have a sheet of plywood in garage with 3- 2x4’s screwed to lengthwise that i take when I pick up a sheet or so of drywall. Leave tailgate up and put drywall on top of plywood. Ratchet strap down and risk of drywall breaking is greatly reduced.
