I took my Ranger out on some very mild fire roads today. The roads are gravel and not too bad, especially for a 4wd vehicle. I was in 4H because I was going up a pretty good incline that lasted for maybe a mile and the rear wheels were spinning on the gravel. At the top, the lumber company had a closed gate, blocking the road. I sat there in Drive for a few minutes looking at my map and then tried to shift it into Reverse. The lever would not budge from Drive forward to Neutral or Reverse. Thinking maybe it was because I had some pressure on the drivetrain due to the include I inched forward a few times while trying to bump it into Neutral. As I crept closer to the gate, I was finally able to get it to shift out after a couple of times. Since that, everything was fine. I did not force it and when it did finally move out of Drive the movement was NOT smooth.

Has anyone experienced this before? It reminded me of my old car that used to be hard to shift out of Park when on a hill and putting the parking brake on after it rolled back that little bit. IN my case, the truck never rolled back to put pressure on the shift linkage. Honestly, I would not be surprised if these were electronic shift.

It sounds like it was preloaded just like you thought.

Thanks...could be either one of those. Hopefully, whatever it is, the transmission doesn't make a habit of it!

What you described has never happend to me under the conditions you noted, only while trying to shift out of park and the park pawl mechanism has been pre-loaded.
I tried looking in the shop manual attached to this forum, but the entire section, automatic transmission external controls (307-05) pdf file is empty.
Not even the hill start assist feature would affect shifter operation, this system description is located in your owner's manual under the Brakes section, I'd give you the page number, but the online publication does not have any such numbers.
Read this section in your manual, according to it manual transmission Rangers were available, presumably for the North American market.
Yet another absurdity in the blasted book
