Appears to be a mechanical malfunction.

We are lucky this happened when it did, but even so people are missing and probably dead, and that is a very sad and tragic thing.

It’s amazing how quickly that bridge collapsed. It was completely in the water in about two seconds. Like a boxer with a weak chin.

Back when I was a trucker I was across that bridge many, many times. Indeed it's frightening to watch that video of it going down!

loaded cargo ship is very heavy. i doubt any bridge would handle a blow from one without damage. not to take away from the gravity of the ordeal and lost lives - but when one port closes due to one bridge and its predicted to make problems across the nation, its a sad / serious reminder we need to be more self sustaining in the usa again. geez. do we make anything here anymore.

So the pilot crashed the boat and captain & company have to pony up for it.

Just have to ask why the hell he ordered the anchor to be dropped prior the bridge. Should have just coasted under the bridge first instead of panicking and crashing the boat to the pylon.

the anchor was an attempt to slow down the ship to minimize damage. without power changing course or "steering" to safety is impossible. coasting safely without power is like landing safely after jumping out of a plane with no parachute. the current wind and momentum all worked against the odds of it going well. i havent looked into but id say its a safe bet the course they were on prior to loosing control was the pilot preferred route based on several restrictions like draft. impact was on the correct side proving they were at least at one point on the correct side of the channel as required. heavy vessel like that is draft limited to the channel. even with a tug standing by on scene it would have still been a mess. a much better question would be why the company that owns the vessel did not keep it in safe condition. did it have a proper crew that was capable of keeping the ships vital systems in working order. good crews and well fit ships cost a lot of money. likely that owner / company was cutting corners to save money gambling all would go fine. they lost the bet.

Having a working ship helps. Wrecking the ship and channel is bad, wrecking the bridge on the same go is worse.

Will be interesting to read the investigation report and suggestions, if ever it comes public.

I read two minutes of data from the "black box" is missing. Do they stop when power is lost? One would think they would have a UPS backup power supply for stuff like that.

I'm not surprised the impact damaged the bridge but I was shocked at how fast it came down.

So when is the next one happening? They already had one more in Oklahoma.

When the train derailment happened in Ohio what followed a slew of train derailments. And when Boeing had a failure we had a multitude of plane problems after that. Where will the next barge/bridge mashup happen?

For the time being if I have to cross a bridge I'm going to pull over and look around for cargo ships first. If I see one coming I'm gonna wait a bit. Or maybe drive really fast across the bridge to beat it depending on the situation.

my scalp is tingling for my tin foil hat just thinking of ideas why it was missing two minutes... so many cameras on it in good focus too. contrast that with mystery security cam people that look like a film from 1925 that sat out in the sun for a week lol.

It is crazy that you can shoot a movie with a cell phone camera now but security cameras give us photos that look like they were taken with 1920's cameras.
