AA only intermittently skips to next song

I am trying to figure out why this is happening but when I have my phone connected to the AA usb and running spotify, the steering wheel buttons only sometimes changes to the next song when pressed. Its just a minor inconvenience but annoying none the less because I have to either go to my phone or the receiver to hit skip. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect, it works. It seems like there is an order in which I should do things. For example, open spotify on phone, play, connect to USB, hit spotify on receiver etc. I am not sure what order, but one of them causes the steering wheel buttons to work and others cause them to not work. On the steering wheel, the call/hangup and command button always works... so I don't believe the problem is isolated to just the buttons.

Another problem that I still can't figure out getting AA to automatically open spotify and google maps upon connecting. I'm not sure if this is normal but when I plug my phone in, if the apps are not manually opened on the phone, then I get a message saying "Spotify doesn't seem to be working right now"... same with maps. Is this normal? Again, minor inconvenience but I don't like it. Feels wonky for a 2021. I have an old thread on this but I figured I'd bump it into this once incase anyone reads it.

One thing you could try is another music app. The same problem with Pandora, for example, would point towards an AA, hardware, or settings problem. Whereas if it seems to be local to Spotify only I'd look there.
