Hey guys would just like some insight on a P0128 code I’ve gotten in my Ranger. I originally got the code 1 month ago on a drive back home (about a 2 hour drive) after getting home I checked the coolant level and it was below the min mark so I got some MC coolant and filled it to the max line. I cleared the code, no issues at all. Fast forward to yesterday, light comes back on during the same drive home, I check the coolant again, it’s at the max line, temp gauge seemed normal. I decided to clear the code before making the 2 hour drive back and the code has not reappeared since. I would also like to add that at time the temp gauge does go past its “normal” range but it is very slightly and it goes back down to normal.

I was actually planning on doing a coolant drain and fill today, but with the code coming back, I’m wondering if it could be a faulty thermostat. Before I decide to do the drain and fill, would it be a good idea to replace the thermostat as well?

Would like to add that the truck has 142k miles and the coolant has not been changed yet.

Sorry if this was a little confusing, any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Thank you!

The P0128 code means that your engine's coolant temperature is too low?
it probably is thermostat, are you getting normal heat from the vents?
how is your MPG? when an engine is not running at spec. MPG is the first sign

As of right now it is 21.1, it bounces between 21.1 and 20.8. It has gone down in the past 2 years I think it was at 22mpg beginning of 2023. I also am getting normal heat from the vents, I would say it takes a little long to heat up but it does get hot.
