High % iso alcohol is a good one and then blow it out with shop air after you dump the alcohol. You can get many bottles very cheaply and do the flush a few times.

I'm not sure about the fuel system, however, sound does carry farther and with more clarity in cold air than it does in warm air so there's a possibility you're hearing it better. I don't think cold air necessarily increases the volume of any noise, so I don't think it would make the noise...
