I call it the 80/20 rule - it takes 80 percent of the time to finish the last 20% of the code. It is relatively easy to write code that just handles the happy path - it is a lot more work to make that code handle errors well. I see it all the time as well and IMO it is getting worse. The...
Great story - I've been in IT for over 30 years as well, doing software on a variety of platforms. I think stories like this need to be told to the newcomers - things today auto backup, but the code I see being written today is incredibly poor at handling errors. It is all happy path stuff.
I...
This is excellent advice. So was @TJC's advice. Better than mine.....
It really all depends on how valuable the data is you are trying to recover. If it really is irreplaceable, let the experts deal with it. What they do isn't cheap, but they can do some pretty amazing work and recover most...
I'd probably start looking at data recovery tools - there are a lot - If one doesn't work, I'd try a different one. Here is one I've used: https://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/free-data-recovery-software.htm
One lesson learned - NEVER delete the source drive until you've made SURE that the copy was successful - I always wait a while before deleting the source drive to make sure all is good.
Second thing - just formatting a disk does not make it safe to donate - disks can be unformatted and most...
My first Ranger (a '98) had the back like this. While I liked the truck, I quickly disliked this particular thing. It was the reason I traded when my lease came due - the 2000 I traded it for had working rear doors which was MUCH better.
I don't know why anyone would design something like...
The F150's are nice, but I think you'd regret your choice on the trails. I don't do serious offroading, but do travel a lot of very narrow, crappy, brushy Forest Service roads. I have friends with full size trucks that have difficulty going places I do. I also have some pinstriping but I...
I'm at 5 years and a month, never changed anything related to BMS or charge capacity and still have the original battery and thus far, I've never gotten the "low battery" warning. I did have to replace my Fob batteries though!
Now watch - now that I've said that I will start getting the...
Its kind of funny - the one time I actually used the winch was kind of silly - or stupid - take your pick. I was driving up in the woods early in the season. I thought I'd see what the snow was like - I didn't get too far and it was getting deep and I was by myself so I decided not to push it...
Yeah, but I hope I never need the winch - I've only used it once out in the woods, and a couple of times at home (just playing with it mainly). I bought the winch as a replacement for my comealong. I'm getting too old do do the comealong....
Its one of those things where "if I have it, I...
Yeah the winch will pull a lot of amps. I use it very infrequently (which is why I keep it disconnected most of the time). I keep a 10mm wrench in the console so I can connect it if need be. I will look for a suitable chassis ground now.
So when I connect the negative for my winch connection (which I only connect when I want to use my winch) I should use a chassis ground instead of the negative terminal?
After having done this recently (see this thread: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/if-you-are-thinking-about-changing-your-transmission-fluid-read-this-first.29154/) I wouldn't attempt it until/unless you have a real dipstick - see @Fitzmotor's EXCELLENT dipstick he built for our Rangers...
While I agree (I like buttons and switches) - I did hear a reasonable argument for touch screens the other day - due to all the "features" that modern vehicles have, if you had a button or switch for everything the dashboard would look like the cockpit of a 747 - Touch screens allow them to put...
That is interesting - there are conflicting capacities:
From the manual:
From the service manual:
I haven't looked yet, but I'm assuming I will need to remove the skid plate(s) before being able to change this fluid.
I noted that too - For what its worth, Rockauto shows it the same. I actually used 75w-90 in the rear (I ran out of time to do the front). Planning to use the same in the front.
It is technically a MBS stick (Mike's Build Shop). @Fitzmotor created it. He did an amazing job with it - it looks like it should have come from the factory. He is still ramping up production, but you can express interest in this thread...
My guess is that there is more of a move to "permanent" fluids (meaning no need to change or even check). Kind of like sealed bearings instead of bearings that need to be packed.
I still think it is stupid for a part that cannot possibly add much at all to the overall cost. It would certainly...
It is on the drivers side of the engine, kind of next to the brake booster.

That thread has a ton of info as well. It is long but has lots of good info in it.
