I would highly recommend replacing those plastic fasteners with rivnuts and thumbscrews. Someone suggested it a few years ago and I did it and it is a lot easier to remove than those stupid plastic things. Other people have used magnets successfully. Here are a few threads about it...

Just an FYI - you don't have to remove the tire to get to the oil filter. All you have to do is turn the wheel to the right and you can access the filter just fine.
