You wouldn't want to live Ewa side now and have to commute into town, I've heard that some motorists will spend 1 - 1 1/2 hours in traffic if they get caught in it in the am...ditto for pm traffic as well.
Oahu way too overcrowded now, but for its shortcomings it's still Paradise to me...

I retired from the Honolulu Fire Department in July 2018 and never did serve in Afghanistan.
The Firefighters you mentioned may have been Federal Firefighters based in Honolulu, a totally separate entity from HFD.
I did, however loose a former HFD Captain who was deployed there...
