Since the Ranger uses an electronic rack and pinion and does not actually have a hydraulic power steering system, I have to add a pump. I've played with the idea from the beginning of finding a way to run a power steering pump on the existing belt and pulley system, but haven't really...
It's been kinda crappy weather here, so I have mostly been working on the Fairlane inside the shop.
Here's an update to where she currently sits:
Power steering gear box is permanently mounted and the frame is reinforced using trail gears ifs box mounting kit.
Got the truck on the ground today. First time on its own full weight since I bought it. Need to do some more mods on the steering, but it's getting close.
I took today off to get some work done on the truck and it snowed so day, so I made an improvised shelter.
Iron Rock makes great stuff. I have a local guy that can build any shaft we can dream up. With that being said, Phil was talking about a shaft with double cardon joints on both ends. Typically you'll see like what iron rock has, just a single, double cardon joint.
Thanks for the response Phil. I've often wondered how a shaft with double cardon joints at each end would work. I always assumed it would get a "jump rope" effect under load. I may look in to it for this project as it would allow me to keep my caster angle higher.
I've got the arms in and axle back under the truck for what I hope is the last time before doing the final cleanup and paint everything.
The front shaft is definitely lacking enough articulation for the solid axle...
Was able to get a break in the weather this week and make some progress after work.
I ended up going with the entire trail gear steering kit. I modified/ removed the front impact bar. I plan on boxing in the body mount. The Toyota IFS box has the pitman arm facing back which requires the box to...
Most likely going to go with a toyota steering box from trail gear as well as the hydro assist kit from trail gear. Going to try out a jeep jl electric power steering pump for the system, appears to have enough psi and volume to run it.
Thanks for the feedback and kind words.
As for now, no plans to change the tcase, I was hoping with the 4.91 first gear, 2.73 tcase and 4.88 gears it would be manageable, but I really like your thought process with a divorced Atlas and get rid of the super long rear shaft.
I will definitely...
