When I was a kid, I saw a drive shaft front-connection failure on a small stake-side dump truck. The entire rear end of the truck jumped up into the air. It was hilarious at the time, but I imagine not very funny to the driver.
A "smart ticked-off Bubba" scenario should be one of your design cases. Moving it back closer to the running boards will reduce the bolt-bending loads somewhat (not much of a consolation, because bolts are not intended to take bending like that), but the "crown nut bar" is still exposed and...
I suppose, though, if Bubba (no offense intended for any Ranger5G members or visitors named Bubba :D) jams one of his shins on it, I don't think he will think to himself, "I'm not supposed to step on that".
I feel your pain, though, about door dings. Keep thinking outside the box. :)
Explain how you would flush the tank with that thing. In the time it would take to find the tool, set it up, get a bucket to hold the excess and suck the fluid out, I could have the tank emptied and working on the first flush cycle with tap water, all the while, sitting in an air-conditioned...
Most small radios can be mounted in the dash tray. There are a couple other threads with ham radio content, showing installation pics:

I just flushed the factory windshield fluid in order to replace it with a supposedly paint-friendly solution. According to the service manual (Section 501-16), accessing the drain plug requires removal of the RF wheel and fender splash shield. In lieu of that craziness, I opted for the obvious...
What @RANGER_MARC said. While no vehicle (even a hand-build Ferrari) is really perfect, a large percentage of employees at most American assembly (and manufacturing) plants these days, TRULY STRIVE for perfection. Sure, there is also a significant percentage of employees that could really...
Yeah, on the way up to TN to pick up my Ranger, I got passed by a new company- or state-owned Ranger (it had some sort of logo on the door). The back-end was so far up in the air, I almost turned around and came back to Marietta. I'm serious; I was thinking like, "what the heck?". I calmed...
You might consider getting a used 2006-2011 Ranger for the interim, if that will fit within your budget. I started out with a 1984 S-10 in '88 and ended up replacing that with the '92 Ranger (aka Ranger #1) in late '91.
Also, what @SubVet said.
