Buy it out absolutely. When upgrading in the future you can then just sell private and make up for not having a trade in sales tax credit in MI. Private sale may be kind of annoying but you'll get much more there than from a dealer in a trade.

hmm interesting. I have no issues with it. Also every single other vehicle I've ever driven that showed miles left on the dash baked in some cushion and when it was at 0 miles left/empty there'd still be at least a gallon left in the tank.

Well when I filled it up when it said 2 miles left I still had over a gallon and a half in the tank. Like I said there are a ton of gas stations around me, I don’t see any need to fill it up earlier. Usually fill it up when there’s over 2-3 gallons left in the tank. I’d hardly call that fumes.
