Hopefully the trailer has surge brakes. Electrics and water don't mix to well. If it does have surge brakes you won't need anything.

Yes, my Toyota Landcruiser would brake heavily and tighten the seatbelts. In the Ranger I have only experienced the warnings.

I would suggest you tow which ever is heavier with the truck.
