I was recovered from a snowy/icy slush utilizing the front recovery hooks. It was a simple tow rope recovery. Slack was slowly pulled out and then I was towed out. This was on a rough, narrow forest road. I haven't needed to be snatched out, but I would see no issue in using those same points...
+1 This is what I carry in a tote with all my other gear in the truck bed. I've used it on uneven forest trails to change a tire, and have used it with 2.5" OEM lift and 33" tires. I thought about going bottle jack, but then I'd need a plate underneath for uneven terrain. This solves that...
The Valhalla branded panels have a max load capacity of 250 lbs. I'm not sure what the tie-downs are rated for, but even so, anecdotally they seem sturdy. I have used them as a tie-down point without any problem (even over rough terrain).
This is part of a series where Ronny Dahl and friends visit Moab, UT. It features a modified Ford Ranger, but its mostly done for clearance. No front locker, and uses Trail Control and rear locker. Plenty capable.
Cots, and a tent tall enough to stand upright in, are the game changers. I finally destroyed the Walmart tent I used for years, and it served us well across multiple states and weather events. But getting a Nemo Wagontop 4P tent has made camping even more enjoyable. And I believe that is the...
I was just thinking about this the other day. I foresee a point in the next few years where those who jumped head-first into going outside in wake of COVID restrictions will come to the realization that they didn't need all the gear they just bought. There will be a lot of sweet semi-used gear...
The NATO 20L gas cans are pretty much the gold standard, as far as metal containers go. They are the only can to be EPA/DOT/CARB legal. ULINE makes this one...
Clean the chassis, simply spray with hose, maybe use diluted Simple Clean (or equivalent). Let it dry. Spray on metal surfaces, avoid brakes, try not to soak electrical connections or rubber boots. Fluid Film is lanolin based and safe for those areas but its best to avoid if you can.
I used Fluid Film for the frame initially, in the winter. It is lanolin-based like the LANOX MX4. I don't need that much protection in the PNW, but I want to be pro-active. The MX3 is more for touch ups and throughout the spring/summer. I use the MX3 on my engine bay too after cleaning because...
Road salt scares me, hahaha. Coming from California and then being stationed in Washington, I had never given it much thought. That mindset changed when I decided to buy a new truck.
Noice. I'm looking at a cheap pressure washer and this would be perfect.
Before seeing member's posts on rust, I had already considered adding chassis cleaning to my maintenance schedule. I have recently started using Super Clean (degreaser) cut to 4:1 (water : degreaser) to clean underneath, staying away from rubber as much as possible. Wash off, let dry and then I...
Started as a mover during the summers in high school to make some walking around money. After graduating, I worked as a technician/fabricator on remote operated vehicles (ROVs) at an engineering company. Our clients included law enforcement (FBI, Coast Guard, sheriff's departments), defense...
It is a bit big, after all it is a jack stand. Definitely belongs in the bed, but at least for me, it has proven well worth the space it takes up in my tote (the factory scissor jack would have been useless when/where I needed it).
I use a Powerbuilt Unijack. It is a combo jack stand and jack (see image). Theses are available at HomeDepot, Tractor Supply, Walmart, and Amazon. I keep it in a tote in the truck bed, along with other over-night/recovery gear. I have used it on gravel forest roads to change a tire and it was...
I have started using Avenza Maps. It is the same service used by USFS rangers. It allows you to operate off-line and download map layers. There is a premium feature, though you can access USGS and, more importantly for me, USFS MVUM (motor vehicle use maps) without it. I pair that with the Dual...
