Mororhome breakdown (severe limp mode, no throttle) on Ratan Pass, I-25. Towed to shop in Trinidad, who couldn't fix it after day and a half, then towed on to Pueblo. So we had time to kill.

That Raton Pass is a bitch - when we came up through there it looked like all the motorhomes/trailers were either about to die or doing 80 mph. . .

There are worse places to get "stuck" . . .

Yeah, I've pulled fivers and driven class c with a toad several times. Never enjoyed it but always made it. I think I'm done with it.

What was your destination before you got waylaid in Pueblo?

Several years back did the route out of Amarillo via 385 to 87 and to I-25 enroute to Alaska. I-25 all the way to I-90, north from there. One heck of a drive, Ford based class c with V-10, towing a Subaru Crosstrek. Beautiful country...single digit mpg numbers, but had no problems.

@Grumpaw interestingly enough - that was how we came from Palo Duro into colorado too - those long straight aways were amazing, and the climbs up were so gorgeous. I was glad we didnt go west on 40 until we hit 25 . . . but don't tell Ingrid. LOL

Palo Duro Canyon was one of our stops along the way. We were west out of Va, hit many of the state parks and tourist stops. 3 months on the road, 13,000 miles. Raton Pass was mild compared to many of the roads up thru Canada into Alaska.

we came out of south florida and only spent 14 days on the road (we were moving to colorado) I have to say the only place we stopped I was really disappointed with was the cadillac ranch. LOL

Hot Springs Arkansas was a hit.

Palo Duro was our favorite of the entire trip, we spent 2 nights there, I could have spent weeks there...

We were set to spend a week in Creede and a week in Durango with a week left over for whatever. Hope to go back and finish out 2 weeks when the forester is ready.

Yeah, the Caddy Ranch is a big letdown...nothing but shells left.
We did eat at The Big Texan Steak Resteraunt, the home of the 72 oz steak that if you eat it, and the meal, it's free (did NOT try it), and stayed at their campground (free limo from the campground to the resteraunt)

I've passed by that restaurant what seems a million times as a trucker. Never ate there but would have liked to have, I guess.
Amarillo always smelled like cow sh!t to me and couldn't ever wait to get away from there.

Resteraunt was nothing special as far as their food, claim to fame is the 72 oz steak meal.
Yup, going west out of the city on I-40, don't remember how far, but a few miles, ran across the biggest cattle stock yard I have ever seen, right next to the interstate, south side. You could smell it long before you saw it.....?
Also remember along the interstate, but don't remember if it was before or after the stockyard, on south side of the interstate, there was a huge lot of what looked like old trucks, maybe cars also....looked like a huge number of antique/old vehicles....looked like the lot was several acres square in size....just saw it as we were driving by.
Maybe someone familiar with it will chime in.

Clovis NM is much worse than Amarillo. I had to live there almost a year while in the Air Force. My POS mobile home was just downwind of the stockyards. Amarillo smells pretty good when you are coming out of Clovis.

The food is good. Prime rib is best. Fried mushrooms appetizer is great. Many think it's a tourist place but locals eat there also. I'd eat there if I lived there.

I always hope the wind is blowing South when I go through Amarillo, another cool thing to see if you're in the Palo Duro Canyon area Is the museum in Canyon. lots of history about that area from the cattle drive era & Indian history, very much worth the effort to check it out. Panhandle Plains Historical Museum.
