Hi KJ,

That is an old wives tail.. way prior to air bags.... I recall it was the misguided Fed Gov't commercial on safe driving....

best,
Phil
Are there any other type of Fed Gov't commercials? ?Asking for a friend.

No. 9/3 allows you to make 180 degrees of steering input without removing your hands from the wheel. This will get you through most emergency situations. You have an obstacle in front of you, car, child, cow, whatever. You are then able, if needed, to input 180 degrees of steering input say to the left. Then you will need to counter steer. You can then, again if needed, input up to 360 degrees of steering input before making your final input to get you back to center.

8/4 works great for extended high speed driving using "shuffle"steer. There is a shift to more of the shuffle steer for all driving because you keep your hands at 8/4 all the time to avoid the airbag. It makes for interesting slalom for sure.
I guess I've been doing it wrong for 40+ yrs and I've been telling my wife 9/3 instead of the 8/4 she has been doing. I'm not telling her I was wrong, I'll just stop trying to correct her now.

Driving cars from the 50's or earlier, I couldn't imagine trying an 8/4. 9/3 would be tough now on them, may have been easier when I was younger.

Learned something new here today. Thank you all!

Just keeping it real I pretty much always drive with one hand unless I am off-road or taking tight corners.

I thought people driving with 2 hands the entire time behind the wheel was just an advertisement of the DMV or for professional racers.

This may be a dumb question, but has anyone considered just using a wheel/paddles, off an Aussie Ranger Raptor?

Seen a few for sale over here lately from $150aud, up to $1,000 for an unused one, off a brand new Raptor X.

I don't know if it's the same 10 speed box in both trucks, but if I had a 2.0l 10 Speed setup in my truck, I'd be buying one, just to see if it works. Worst case, take off the paddles and you have a nicer leather wheel.

Or, patch into the wiring loom of the wheel, and use the paddles to do cool things, like launch missiles and stuff. Or I don't know, fog lights on/off or something boring.

Just a thought.

Everyone talking about the lil +/- to up/dwn shift are insane! That thing is so ergonomically terrible id likely form carpal tunnel.
Do you have a thumb? Is it where thumbs usually are on the hand? Seems to me like the engineers at Ford who's job is ergonomics did a pretty good job of button placement.

I’ve been secretly lurking the forums looking for a paddle shifting kit or retro fit wheel for the Ranger. It seemed there was some promise with the Explorer steering wheel but nothing ever came out of it.

Lastnight I came across a company called CanShift. They design wireless paddle shifters that shift the trans through canBus. Seems wild but I would love to have the option of shifting my gears via paddles.

I emailed the company lastnight and they seem very interested in providing us with a product. They need some hands on testing with a Ranger around the Detroit area. I would gladly be a test dumby if I didn’t live in Denver.

If anyone is interested in helping out, give Jon a shout out at: [email protected]

They have some reviews up on YouTube and Instagram as well.
To each his own. I loved driving a stick when I had a young man's knees, but with aging, I changed over to automatics and have not looked back. I do not use the self-shifting option in our Rangers, and I would not be interested in OEM Paddle Shifters or aftermarket CanShifters either. If you want to pursue these options, get one and enjoy!

question is...does she know why she is using 8-4 ?
I suspect not although she does shuffle the wheel. I think it looks awkward. Will ask next time she drives and I'm in the car which isn't too often.

Not 100% on this, but i think they may use a different airbag design/button trim. They may also not seat correctly, but that was only on a vid where they were putting an aftermarket wheel on an aussie ranger.

People want to paddle shift a 10 speed transmission?
Yeah, drove a Jeep Trackhawk and even with it having 2 less gears than ours, 8 gears paddle shifting sucks. Although if youre on the track, you arent using all the gears anyway, but who is going to track a ranger.
