Hi guys, I bought a diamondback cover and am waiting for it to be delivered. In the mean time I'm researching rack options to go on top of the cover. I've put together the following and just wondering if anyone could do a "sanity" check on it. My plan is to mount a rooftop tent to the racks.

https://www.rackwarehouse.com/yakima-8000221-landing-pad-1-skyline-anchors-rebox.html

Thoughts? I know tons of people have done similar with the tacoma's but would like to run this by the gang here.

Thanks!

I didn't know you could mount Yakima onto Diamondback:like:

Do you drill into the topper?
Yes from what I've read you just drill through the cover and put some silicon to seal the holes.

I saw the 165 limit but that seem to be the heaviest tower they have. I talked to someone who said they are releasing a more HD tower "soon".

Ideally, I'd like to have the top of the folded tent about equal with the roof line. That way you get a little space between the diamondback and the bottom of the tent to store/load stuff. I figured I would just use some square steel and build it up a bit.

Have you seen these guys?

max+bed+rack+tonneau+brackets.webp

Hi+Rise+Crossbars+MKIII,+Tacoma+-++(1+of+11).webp

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF COVERS THAT WE RECOMMEND:

Diamondback
Extang 2.0
Retrax
Pace Edwards Switchblade
Bestop
Truxedo Truxport
Leer Trilogy
BakFlip (see special instructions below for 2005 and up Tacoma's)
2016+ Toyota Tacoma Factory Tonneau

Many other covers will work, but there are too many to list. If you have a certain cover in mind, email us at [email protected] and we will help determine if it will work.

A good way to positively check compatibility, is to order one of our Single Test Brackets.

Thanks. I did see them. They have some great options for sure. Their main product line though would hinder you from opening the diamond back. The one I really like is the https://www.max-modular.com/shop-max-modular/max-modular-10-high-aluminum-load-bars
But that would put the tent way above the roofline.

I guess I could buy the standard series (http://www.kbvoodoo.com/shop/universal-crossbars-for-tonneau-covers) and cut them down to work so they mount flush to the diamondback.

The other problem is that you can't use standard Yakima/Thule rack accessories for bikes/canoes because the bars are too big.

Sounds like you have to pick one option:
  1. Mount tent above roof and be able to open Diamondback cover
  2. Mount tent directly to Diamondback cover and not be able to open it

I don't expect to open the diamondback with the tent in place. But if the racks are installed and no tent/accessories I want to be able to open the diamond back.

It's looking like the Yakima is the route to go.

Just an update. I've decided to go with the Thule line of products. They all have 220lb limits which is more then enough for the rooftop tent.

I'll post some pics once I get my diamond back and the thule installed!
