Hi Paul,

Tito does not like the fruit or the pads. He was a born in captivity and grew up eating Kale, which is his food of choice. I have mixed up a bit of prickly pare pad in his Kale and he eats around the pad bits... He is a very picky eater, but amazing how much he eats! He is bulking up for the upcoming brumation (like hibernation).

Cool your neighbor's tortoise dine on your prickly pare cactus!

best,
Phil
Phil,
Assuming that Tito is not a desert turtle? Could be another reason that he doesn't like that cuisine. I haven't seen my neighbor's turtles because she takes the prickly pears to them as they are not allowed to roam outside. Am curious to find out what species they are and will let you know and hopefully get some pics... :)

Hi Paul,

Tito is a Sonoran Desert Tortoise, so yes a desert tortoise, Difference is a Turtle is associated with pond, stream, river, lake etc....ie water. Tortoise live in an arid climate with no water. Example, Tito can go for over one year without taking a drink of water.... The myth is that Sonoran Desert Tortoise do not like water....simply not true...during the Monsoon season cloud bursts puddles form in the desert and the tortoise love to wade in and soak in these puddles. They do not have do drink because they absorb water through their anus. Yep...drink through their butt.... Amazing creatures and they are on par with dogs and cats in intelligence. They are cleaver and very smart...tremendous memory both long term and short term. And they are affectionate. Tito knows us and gives us kisses on our ankles when he is in the house ambling around...

Best,
Phil
