I think I just got another hair brain idea and its a shit ton cheaper than Leitner Designs....

$200 for four of them.

$1040 for four

Here is my hair brain idea, take off my side supports and install two on each side. By whatever luck my rack supports are spaced perfectly to insert these boxes. Then I can do a simple drill and bolt job to suspend them via the RCI rack.

But OFC Ranger, what are you going to do with your side supports? Well that gave me another wacky idea. I may see how they look and if I install them with stand off's on my rack skirting (the unistrut portion with all the cut slots). If it works, I can order 2 more side supports from RCI and run them all the way down the sides and I've added a crap ton of extra connection points for gear or other useless stuff I really dont need!

So yea the Leitner Designs are angled and yes they use fancy cabinet shocks, but who cares! Pffft....!

So I just figured something out. Smaller comparments, but I need just 7 more ($140 from Amazon). I think the exterior looks nicer. Downfall is I will have to add on some basic lock mechanisms if I don't want to be bothered with the ugly standard lock and cables. I mean I never install anything super valuable in the truck bed area, but some basic security shouldn't be ignored. The good news is all of these come with a weather gasket already installed.

Also these boxes are only 12-13" in deptch vs. Bawer 18", which means I retain some extra bed stacking clearance.

Ignore the offset and inverted side support, I just did not want to move one of my aux reverse lights. So hey cool... like a glove... but wait. I need clearance to pop the side latches once two boxes are side by side. Hmmm....

Well hot damn, the latches can be taken off and flipped symmetrically. I can now pop the latches from the top instead of bottom. I will need to reposition my rack bed side supports to their max, but I should have just enough room. Also the lids will open fine, the lip that the top structure offers gives clearance.

Some possibilities, as you can see compartment size can be somewhat customized:

With this route I can also keep my side supports on, just higher, which may not be a bad thing depending on attachments (shoves, jacksm awning system without having to tap new holes on the platform.

What do you think? 8 of these containers, or 4 of the Bawer?

I like how it's shaping up and I seriously appreciate a less expensive, home grown method over expensive store bought. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I do it myself!

I wonder if you can buy locks, install them into the cases, and seal around them with silicon or Sikaflex???

I myself will be bolting a Harbor Freight Apache box or two to my bed rack and then add padlocks. It wont look uber nice, but it'll work!

They are pretty beefy for the cost.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0722CZMXZ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

I got this one at Walmart on sale for $15.00 in October last year with intentions of making it a truck bed electrical junction box. Looks like Walmart doesnt have them anymore (at least near me) so Amazon is $5.00 more.

You are not going to "press in" the sides on these like you can a standard tote, or even one of Plano's normal larger totes. I suspect they would crack before they bent.

Thats my goal on shif tonight after things calm down. Time to use my master Amazon skills to locate something suitable. It doesn't need to keep a seasoned thief out, but something basic is needed for sure.

Ideally I'd love to find drill in lockable folding T-handles. (like the Bawer has)

I would probably run an extra piece of steel or aluminum 1/8 flat stock along the red line. Just to give the top side lip extra support and help elimate any flex.

Smaller bolts and nuts would be installed RCI support sides by drilling through case (sealing afterwards) and RCI supports as connection points. These would pretty much be hidden as they would go through the extruding lip on the RCI backside.

I would then run similar bolts in the middle where the two boxes meet unsupported with a single bolt (x3 or x5) and then a nut on the opposing side. Tighten and loktite just enough to remove any flex.

I could also probably see about installing a rubber wedge of some sort on the bottom side of the boxes and bed railing just to square out any remaining flex.
