Having a tough time deciding between the two. I've never owned a truck before, so I don't have much to go off of. I'm planning on talking to the dealer tonight about a preorder, and leaning towards the Lariat so I can have some of the comforts I've been use to with my VW.

I'm single, no kids, and rarely use the back seats of my GTI; but it's also been nice if I'm taking coworkers out to eat (pretty rare). About the same frequency as hauling people in my back seats, I'm doing small projects which use longer lumber/materials. In my mind I'm leaning towards the extra bed length and lower price.

Anything else I should be considering?

Keep in mind CrewCabs are more desirable by the general public, so while it's cheaper upfront it won't hold the same resale value.

The SuperCab is tiny, literally unusable by anyone. Please read the thread Interior Pictures with lots of photos of the Supercab.

The rear seat in a SuperCab really is for children only. At least the new version has real seats rather than those dangerous jump seats in the older Rangers.

I went through the same decision making process and chose the supercab. Extra foot of bed length *for me* trumps being able to very very infrequently carrying 3 to 4 adults. But. I'm married and we have a second car (SUV) that can handle those duties. Not concerned about resale, but that's me. If you are doing projects with longer lumber, you will appreciate the longer bed. Years ago, I had a 98 Ranger configured the same way and, like you, did lots of projects and appreciated the longer bed.

I also have something else in mind later down the road if not with this truck, with a similar truck. I had a Jeep configured for camping (some say overlanding). It was very capable but overloaded and top heavy (had a roof top tent). Learned a lot with that Jeep that I put 10k mile on in 3 months of travel. One thing I want the capability to do is stealth camp in a city, town, rest area without drawing attention. To do that, I need a 6' bed.

If it was my only car and I was single, not sure what my decision would be.

Funny, but when I first moved back to Hawaii, I thought I was all setup to get a 2018 GTI. Long story, but they had to do 3 recall services then they found a fourth problem (all before I had taken delivery)..a pinched brake light wire that necessitated a wiring harness change (ripping out the dash), so I rejected the car and went and bought a CPO Rogue (Reliable transportation appliance) because we needed something.

The fact that the B & O sound system was only available in the super crew is what made my decision easy.

Good point. I'm also weighing doing a lease, so I'm not sure that will matter too much.

Start watching at the 5:30 mark.

This was pretty funny. He should just wrap his legs around the driver. This is just making my decision even harder.

The GTI has actually treated me very well, and I haven't had any issues in the 5 years of ownership. I ended up using it like a 'truck' most of the time, with the back seats folded down. I just want space now that I can not have to be as careful and can handle larger/longer items. I also like the idea of setting up camp in the truck bed with a truck cap on. Solo I guess it still could be done diagonally in a 5' bed, but definitely not as good use of space.

You'll still be fine carrying 8' materials in the quad cab. With the tailgate down you have closer to 6.5 feet of load length so some boards are only sticking out another 18" past that. Just secure it and flag it.

I ordered the Super Cab. If I needed comfortable rear leg room in a truck I would be buying an F-150 Super Crew. Without being able to sit in a Ranger prior to ordering I was concerned the Ranger Super Crew would have dismal rear leg room and a 5' bed. So I went with the the Super Cab guaranteeing no rear leg room but having the 6' bed. Personally I just need some cab space to stow items. Have a 2017 Explorer when room is needed. If rear seat room was a necessity I wouldn't order a Ranger until I sat in it, and put the car seat or booster in the back with the kid/kids.

On another note: I don't know where the front seat positioning is when Ford specs the rear leg room? All the way back, middle, all the way forward? But for some comparison the 3rd seat leg room on my Explorer specs at 33" and some change. I'm 6' and if I sit straight on to the second row seats my knees are into the back of the second row. I had a 2014 Honda Civic with back seat specs at 36" and some change. My 7 yr old granddaughter sitting in a booster seat had to have the passenger seat almost all the way up so her feet wouldn't hit the seat back. I believe the Ranger Super Crew specs at 34.5" and the Super Cab at 30".

I've owned a number of trucks in the past and they have all been regular cabs. My philosophy was I like the feel of the small cab and maneuverability of it and if people wanted rides they could call themselves a cab or get their own car because rarely do they pitch in for gas/beer money anyway. I'd totally go supercab all the way but now I have a 9 month old son and I need room in the back for a car seat, so I no longer have a choice. I guess life always finds a way to make the choice for you in the end.

I would still get the crew. With the tailgate down you have about 6.5 feet of load length so standard 8 foot lumber is only sticking out 18". Just secure it and flag it.

The extra interior room may end up more valuable than you think for things you want to keep dry in foul weather or secure from sticky fingers.

I've filled up the back seat on my Dakota many times with things that were not appropriate for the bed. Good example is a road trip to setup remote office. Had my luggage, server, phones, tools, cable, etc... It would have never fit in an extended cab.

Thanks for the input. I'm now leaning towards the crew from listening to these comments.
Unfortunately, I had a 2nd bad experience with my local dealer tonight and I'll be trying a 2nd dealer this weekend. I had an appointment, and waited for 45 mins listening to the sales guy try to talk an old lady into buying a car. I got tired of waiting and bailed; also listening to his tactics made me really not want to give him my $. My standards for sales people might be too high.

I would rather have a regular cab pickup over a supercab Ranger. The backseats appear to be really cramped. In my opinion, it’s not worth giving up the bed space for unusable seats. Just my opinion
