I finally got around to working on finding a matching fifth 17" aluminum stock wheel for our truck. I want to be able to include our 5th matching tire in the rotation and have a full size highway-ready spare.
However, I am now wondering if there is going to be an issue mounting it in the bay. I have never taken the spare out and unfortunately the truck is being shipped right now so I don't have access to it for another few weeks.
That said, the current spare is a steelie with a center hole that the spare cable goes into. see this photo poster by another poster previously
however the aluminum stock wheel has no center hole, only lug nut holes. it is this model:
will i be unable to mount an aluminum spare? or can i just run the cable/bar through one of the holes off center and snug it up? im assuming i will want to put a wood or rubber shim between the aluminum spokes and the steel bar to avoid it marring it while driving and bashing the car around. similarly im worried the small steel bar could turn sideways and pop out of these large aluminum between-spoke holes and drop the wheel on the highway.
i would rather not fabricate something complicated to make it work if i dont have to.
has anyone done this with one of these wheels, or something similar? im kicking myself for not checking this out while i had the truck in hand yesterday...
thanks!
