Here's an interesting graph showing sales trends over the past several years. You can certainly see why Ford and GM are making a huge push towards the EV market. I think Ford will be okay if they play their cards right but GM is in big trouble. Ford is being smart about it and going after the truck and van segment and staying out of cars because they know they cannot compete with Tesla. That is a great move by Jim Farley.

I think the mustang Mach-e is the best selling EV car not from Tesla so Ford has had some success with cars also.
I agree that it's a great looking car but the technology and build is light-years behind Tesla. Their new giga casting technology is really amazing. Shows what a company not stuck with old world thinking can do.

Tesla is investing in and advancing battery technology - key to Musk's goal of making a sub $30 k vehicle. link below . Also saw a comparison between a Chevy Bolt and a Tesla - the Tesla carries a higher price but it was far superior in every other aspect. Agree that Ford is wise to make EV vehicles that buyers are familiar with (inc retention of model names) and fit current preferences - pickups and suvs, but the limited range for those that tow is a non starter for a sizeable portion of that market.

yes to Tesla's credit many innovations, calculated risk taking and a very sound marketing strategy, Farley is attempting to emulate some of it but Tesla's lead in so many categories is big.

Mandates weren't there 16 - 19. Unfortunately the government is wasting tax payer dollars with the stupid $7500 rebate that isn't needed. The EV market has enough demand without any incentives for all manufactures to sell every one they can make.

It is not a rebate but a non refundable tax credit (key is non refundable) and qualifying for it has numerous stipulations - such as where the EVs is assembled and batteries are manufactured, it also limits the credit to a certain income level of the buyer - so it's designed to increase ability of lower income levels to buy EVs and spur domestic battery production. My opinion is that higher income (wealthy) folks can usually limit their tax exposure owing to all sorts of loopholes that many lower income folks don't qualify for, at is stands now that aren't all that many EVs that qualify for the credit. given the stipulations.
