I was reading one of the forum threads and it said the pillar trim finish is just vinyl, which I didn't know. Not that I plan on changing them up, but if someone does, other than the stainless steel aftermarket pillar trim pieces, there is semi permanent adhesive Post Trim Kits available in different color vinyls which aren't very expensive! Click on Product Options to see colors.

Yup, they are just a very heavy duty vinyl. Just an overlay. Easily removed with body color full paint underneath.
Removed mine several months ago and I like the paint look...

Yes, it's just a vinyl sticker on this particular vehicle. Some use plastic covers, or are painted(not as popular). It's just to make the windows look like one from a designer stand point. I prefer the stickers as the plastic ones on some vehicles are a pain to keep scratch free and are just as a pain to replace and cost more. Just my opinion ;)
