Phil, I've joined the prestigious ranks of "5g Owners that Rescue Desert Tortoises"

Here's our "Sweet Little Rose"
(named by our 5 year-old.)

PXL_20240813_151912444.MP.jpg

She's a 3 year-old rescue from the Tortoise sanctuary in Las Vegas. The son of the owner of the sanctuary lives in our neighborhood and the story goes - one of the male tortoises and one of the female tortoises burrowed under the porch at the sanctuary and found each other. Babies were a surprise they were not expecting so they had to re-home all of hatchling tortoises, and we got one! She still belongs to the state, so there's not necessarily a commitment on our end, though we're challenging ourselves to see how long we can go, haha.

We also aren't positive if it's a girl - only my son is! ?

Hi Adam,

I just flat love it! Beautiful desert tortoise! Okay...so determine the sex at 3 years old, look at the back of the top shell by the tail...if the shell flares away from the tail, it is a female... If it curves under the shell toward the tail, it is a male... It is an adventure to figure out what the tortoise will eat. They are strictly herbivores, but it depends on what they were fed before you got them. Tito was fed Kale and is his food of choice.... Way cool on the adoption! You will get to know them by their personality...they are unique in that aspect. They are very smart...just wait...they will amaze you with what they discover and do.... Your son will have a lasting experience of having such an interesting reptile.

Here is a picture of what my gardener found from his "male" tortoise that the family of the former owners of "him"

Tortoise was named Cruiser...UM...Cruisa, eh?

Best,
Phil

Thank you, Phil!

We let Rose go loose in the family garden and discovered she likes grape vine leaves best. (Slim pickins in the desert but a buffet is a buffet ?)

She loves the tortoise "cookies" that the rescue gave us but when my son catches her eating he's sure to overwhelm her with a feast of grape leaves which she devours.

("The little one is my favorite!")

You are correct we were stunned how quickly "she" figured out where her food was coming from and warmed up to the family in no time.

On that note... "She" looks awfully like a boy per your advice above. What do you think?

Happy springtime to Tito from us all in Nevada! Rose is yet to wake up here. But we are ready!

Yep...believe Rose is a male... we have a acquaintance here that has Daisy...100% sure it is a male, but Daisy he is... They do hear, but not in the range of the human voice, they are extremely sensitive to vibrations. The frequency which they hear is much lower like the rumble of a diesel truck or thunder for example...

Best,
Phil
