I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive code reader for my 2021 Ranger. Something portable that I can add to the tool box.

I've done some searching, but have not come up with anything except professional models at over 2k -- which is not an option.

Thanks.

ForScan is a code reader that I have but have never used for that purpose.

For a OBD2 all vehicle scanner I use BlueDriver Android app with their branded OBD2/Bluetooth dongle. Under $100 usually, wait for a sale if you can, they do go on sale.

Led me to a fix for the engine light on my 2014 dodge. It even has recommended repairs and parts needed.

A friend used it then told me it even detected problems that weren't enough to set off the engine light. Something about some voltages being out of range, maybe bad ground. I don't know about that.

There are plenty of options.

After the best customer service I have EVER had. BlueDriver has my recommend.

Thanks, but unfortunately it does not work with an iPhone.

Use a https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-mxp/

This works with IPhone, Android or a PC. Using a PC will also run Forscan. Bonus with this is you can also run a screen display of the gauges you’re missing in the dash. If you got some skills you can make your own custom screen. So on mine got boost, water temp, battery voltage, and a few others. Change them around how you like. Many free displays available from other users. When I’m serious I use my iPad for a larger screen display. These also are flashable for upgrades from manufacturer

Thanks everyone. I need to be more specific.

I want a portable, self-contained reader, not one that uses Windows / Android OS or requires a laptop to read.

Most of the portable, self-contained units I've seen so far do not work for vehicles after 2017. The generic readers do not work very well (or at all) with the newer Fords, have the wrong connectors, or have very limited readout data.

I'm under the impression after searching for several hours that no such code reader exists yet except for Windows-based systems / phones.

Thanks again.

Walmart. Maybe $25-30. I forget. Super simple, gives the codes and lets you clear them after a repair.
