Trying to buy running boards from my local Ford dealer. I asked if I could use my Ford Rewards points to partially pay for them, and he said they can only do that if I let the dealer install the parts. Is that really the case? Should I try a different dealer?

Try a different dealer. Yours is just trying to make $$$ off of you for an install.
If your mechanically adept, its just a nut and bolt add on.
Don't let them feed you a line about "unless it's done by us it will void your warranty"...it will not.
I'd try a serious attempt to talk to the dealership owner or at least the manager to find out whats going on and why their trying to screw you.
And, you can buy these boards all over the web...and no one is gonna refuse to sell them to you without an "install".

Also, check out the forum classified section under exterior parts...several members selling factory running boards...cheap...maybe one in your area.

Yeah, unfortunately no steps for sale on the forum in my area.

Called another dealer and he said he'd sell me the steps no problem.

Thanks everyone!

They could be confused because the transaction has to be performed through the dealership's service department, rather than their parts department, but there should be no problem on Ford's end just selling you the accessory without the installation.

But the cynic in me thinks they know that and are just trying to milk extra dollars out of you.

It was hard to tell if he was trying to make a buck, or if he just didn't understand how it works. No problem, the other dealer is only a few miles away.
