That would be Roman cultural habit of wearing togas, subsequent invention of foricae and later system upgrades by Alexander Cummings, Thomas Crapper and Joseph Gayetty.

However the cultural divide line for the use of this system was along the Italy-Germany-Sweden-Finland axis. Western side used this system form ~1700 onward (prior to that, we shitted to a hole in the ground/floor too) where as the eastern side did not. A hole in floor method was used on the eastern side as this would be anatomically correct and natural way for a human.

Now when world became smaller the people from the east traveled to west, thus meeting the western system first time. Without instructions the hole in the ground was just feet or two up on raised pedestal but doable as in the picture above. Thus, without instructions, the shit storm began and therefore the birth of above instruction manual.

I do not know who did the first manual, but it's widely spread nowdays in mixed culture environments.
