So, I'm not sure I'm understanding the offset measurements that I see. For instance, I look at a rim and it says +12mm offset. Does this mean that the face of the tire once mounted will sit flush with the fender? I know that the size of the tire (that's what she said) matters. What I'm looking at doing is getting rims with a 265/70/17 tire (probably Falken...but more likely Nitto Ridge Grapplers...just gotta see how much the bank account can handle). The rims I'm looking at are the Fuel D681 Rebel, but I'm not sure as to what I need to get for the offset measurement (I've found it offered at -12mm offset and a +1mm offset). What exactly, or I should say how will this make the wheel fit on my truck. Oh, and a RC 2.5" level on the front. Any help in understanding this would be greatly appreciated.

Offset is only one factor when determining how far a wheel is going to be pushed out versus stock.

You really need to know the width of the wheel in order to calculate the backspace, and even then, the width of the tire also plays a factor.

All offset is itself is how far the hub mounting surface is out of line with the centerline of the wheel. Why you would need to know the wheel width is because you can have two wheels with a +12mm offset, but if one wheel is 8.5" wide and the other is 9" wide, you end up with two different backspacing measurements (in this case 5.2" vs. 5.5" backspace) and different amounts that the tire will be pushed out as a baseline.

As a reference, stock Ranger wheels have between 6.2" and 6.7" depending on the specific wheel. The most common 17x7.5" size is at 6.4" of backspace.

One way of looking at potential differences from your stock set up:

If your current tire is 255 wide and you change out tires only to a 265 tire, the tire outer sidewall will be 5mm more outward.

If your wheel is oem +55 (inset) and you change out wheels only to a +12 mm wheel, the tire outer sidewall will be 43 mm more outward. (and I expect, stick out past the fender)

Here you go!!! This should answer your question!! Also the factory wheels on the ranger have a +55 offset!!

Awesome video. I'm more of a "got to see it" type. Thanks!!!

Also, thanks to @painter1 as well for the info!

Ronny Dahl did that video and he does a lot of videos for those who go offroad. A lot of good information that is pretty universal to the offroad world.

I know what you mean, I have to draw it out with pencil and paper to visualize it.

If those Fuel rims are the 17x9 and you look at the +1 offset version. That rim centreline will be 2.63" further out than the oem 17x8 ((oem 55 - 1mm) + (1" rim difference / 2)). The -12 version will be even more.

With a wider than stock rim you'd want to move the wheel outward at least enough to compensate for half of the increased rim width because I think stock, there isn't much extra available clearance to the spindle/knuckle. (this goes to the backspacing mentioned above).

For comparison the coming Ranger Tremor is spec'd with your 265/70R17 tire choice size. Rims to be 17x8, +44 offset rims (~1/2" further outboard). And there'll be a 1/2" or better wheel lip flare for legal tire coverage.

Not sure why Ford is going with a different offset than non Tremor as I think some folks on here are running that tire size successfully on existing oem rims. There must be a reason, perhaps it's simply having a wider track width for increased stability (?). It's a small alteration, that reportedly also includes a new spindle design. But there is a school of thought to keep the offset as close to oem design as possible.

The wheels Ford is putting on the Tremor package is the raptor wheels and they have the same offset. If anything they are wider wheels. I believe 17X8.5 or 17X9. Still a +55 offset. With that said the only difference is the wheel sticks out ever so slightly and sticks in a little bit as well.

Well that would make a lot more sense than a new single purpose wheel for NA.

Got the spec from here (pg 13. option 64W). It wouldn't be the first error in these type of documents. This one lists a Tremor 4x2 !
Thx.

OK sorry to off topic ... looks like the Raptor rims are 17x8.5 +55
https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-1007-RGR1785OR

I was sure I'd read and heard the Tremor had new offsets, reinforced by the doc I linked above including the listing of 44mm EDIT 24mm wider track specs (on the Tremor Supercab !) . And also this Aussie release for their similar coming FX4 Max
https://www.ford.com.au/commercial/ranger-fx4max/

But mostly from the Ford USA media release, " Thanks to its General Grabber tires and new wheel lips, Ranger Tremor has a 1-inch wider stance"
https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2020/09/14/ford-ranger-tremor.html

But then the "Fact Sheet" reads, "wheel lip moldings with 1" wider offset"

So if the "wider stance" is from 10mm wider tires than base model and/or bigger wheel flares, that's pretty bogus.

If I ever get one I'll post up an info thread.

I just ordered the Raptor rims for my 2020 Ranger Lariat. I should have them in a few weeks. Then I will go tire shopping and probably will get the Cooper AT3's? My mechanic swears by those tires. Those are +55 offset per above. I can't wait.

Even though the Coopers are good you should check out the Firestone Destination XT. Not sue what size you are going for but I can say the Firestone is nice

Thanks for the thoughts Chris! I will cross that bridge once I get the rims. I just don't want a noisy tire or a lot heavier tire than the stock Hancock's. I won't be going off road that often but want to do more and more in the future.
