As my forum name suggest I use my ranger as a work vehicle. I sometimes work nights. I would like to add a 3 position switch light(white/off/red) on the ceiling of my work ranger. I do use the dome light function when the doors are open only turning on the white light manually when needed from the factory switch using the factory lights.

My specific question is can I remove/unhook the factory bulbs, splice into the power for the new white/red light that I'll mount on the ceiling, and just leave the factory dome switch to on?

I wonder if the switch is left in the on position will it time out and stop sending power or is it if draw is detected?

Since you're already adding a switch and a white/red light. I would suggest running the positive from battery with inline fuse, then doing a body ground for the negative. Locate the switch and light in a place you desire. The timeout through the BCM can be adjust through ForScan for on times but that would be a hassle when not using it for your application. The reason for a body negative ground is so it doesn't false trip or error the battery monitor in the Ford system. Cleaner approach in the end. Use a 3-way toggle switch (On/Off/On) for desired modes.
