Agree here.

My mom's 2022 Edge had a check engine light for a bad cat at about 10k miles. It was warrantied and has been fine since. Sometimes things are just defective. The good thing is most emissions components have at least an 8 year / 80k federal warranty.

I can't see how premium or regular gas will affect the cat much. That said, I run premium in my Range, but have other vehicles that run regular in my household.

Thats another item against that service writer advising to use premium and that using "regular ethanol" caused the CC to go bad....
Once the exhaust leaves the engine, the CC dosen't know "regular exhaust" from "high test exhaust".
I would love to pin that service writer down as to his "remedy".

I find it funny that they want you to use a different octane. The one thing I've learned in all my years of driving. (Got my license in 1979) Is short trips will kill you CC. I used to live about 5 miles from work. Killed the CC's in 2 cars. But then again, they were cheap cars. (1984 and 1987 Chevette's)

It ain't everyone that can say they've owned TWO 'Vettes in their lives ?

It's just very possible your CC had a defect of some kind that led to it's going bad.
Reason I say this is that, personally, I've had many vehicles over the years that had CC, some driven over 100,000 miles, years old, and sold or traded with the OE CC still working.
Also, having been on the forum for almost 3 years, I doubt if there has been a handful, or less, of members having a CC go bad.
Warranty will take care of it, so get it done and resume enjoying your Ranger.

Back home, running like a top again. The service chap said higher octane wouldn't hurt, but, most importantly, longer drives and step on the pedal to accelerate, burning off deposits .

Actually, I owned 3 The first was a used 1990 Chevette Scooter. It had the optional rear seat. I only had it a little over a month.

a classic story of an erudite dealership and service manager, I've posted before :

While visiting WNY driving a 2004 SAAB (MPFI) my throttle body bit the dust and being curious in nature and having nothing but time on my hands while waiting at the dealership for the new throttle body I asked the service manager if TB failure was common on Saabs. He said it is rare that they fail, but if I was one of those using the cheap gas sold by the Indians (there is a Seneca Indian reservation nearby where gas is sold exempt from federal and state levies)then my TB would likely fail owing it to being subjected to the subpar gas. The guy obviously was clueless but I surmised that maybe he was a relative of George Armstrong Custer and held a grudge against native americans.

maybe the service writer advising premium and non ethanol gas can make a youtube video and give guys like the Ford Tech ( macalupoo ?) some competition for creativity and making stuff up on the fly.
