I had a 2020 (5g) 4 runner with the 4.0 V-6 engine and that thing was a tank, but it rode like a tank on the road, and the seats were horribly painful,( like most toyota seats) and like said the rust on the frames starts early and fast.
I found that I needed a pickup truck again ,so I traded it in on the Ranger and got almost all the money I spent back, so it was worth it to me.

The used car Toyota salesperson agreed that Tacomas had many flaws, but they love getting them as they remain in high demand. I've visited numerous mountain towns in CO and Tacomas still are widely owned by locals - in particular blue collar everyday Joes, with more affluent residents or visitors they tend to favor Jeeps or increasingly Ford Broncos.

Sounds like Hiluxes over here, they are a dime a dozen, were in fact the best selling pickup for many years, until the Ranger showed up an pipped them for one year and swapped back and forth since. But by comparison they are THE most expensive for what you get, the base models are bare bones indeed, the suspension comes directly from some railway cart, not helped by the crappy seats, and the current model has copped a fair beating with the ugly stick. If I bought one the first thing I would do is stick a front bar on it, maybe that's what Toyota intended.
But in fairness they do a have a reputation for good build quality, toughness, and reliability, and the autos use Aisin units which along with ZF are probably the best in the business, pretty much guaranteed to last the life of the car.
