I haven't found anything to support the grabbing harder thing but am also checking with the trailer manufacturer. It could just be dealer-speak for something I can't print here. Everything indicates the trailer brake controller is working fine which was my original reason for posting here.
I spoke with the shop and was told that grease on the pads would smoke and cause them to grab harder. Is that reasonable or just dealer-speak for something unprintable? He suggested the pads could be aligned a bit differently after reassembling everything and may need some time to settle in...
That seems very plausible. I should have thought of that. Thank you, Grumpaw. I'll inspect the brakes and look for oozing grease. I don't know how the repack was done. I may be speaking with the shop soon.
I've been towing my 19' travel trailer for over a year in my 2019 Ranger XLT with the Ford trailer brake controller working nicely at setting 4. My trailer just got it's first wheel bearing repack and when pulling out I pushed the TBC button to check the brakes and didn't notice the usual drag...
No issues for me. I've been towing a 6200 lb. travel trailer for the last 4 months covering thousands of miles. I stay under all the Ranger weight specs (axles, towing, GVW, hitch weight) as confirmed by several CAT scale weighs. While towing I keep my speed around 55, don't use cruise...
You mentioned a hard tonneau. If you just want knee comfort and slip resistance, it's easy to cut a piece of carpet to size and the tonneau should keep it dry enough. Depending on what you carry you might need something sturdier than carpet. I have LineX spray-in, an ARE cap, and carpet.
Lots of good advice here I won't repeat. I would add that you should familiarize yourself with the underside of your truck, especially clearance of anything that could be damaged by rocks, bumps, ruts, etc. Then develop your sense of what you can safely drive over and the path each tire will...
Make of this what you will. Admittedly this was an experiment on a mostly-level stretch of highway with light traffic and the displayed mileage is usually a bit higher than my calculated mileage. I reset statistics when I got on the highway and took this picture 46 miles later with cruise...
Much depends on your camping style. How long are your camping trips? What sort of weather do you expect (cold, windy)? How much comfort are you wanting? What gear do you take?
My new 2019 XLT FX4 Supercab included a Ford-branded Retrax Pro retractable cover. The cover was solid, secure...
Re quality: Yes, there are quality control issues which makes the choice of dealer very important. I recently bought a Lance 1995 for multi-month trips because of the better construction quality than most, 4-season capability, storage, and it's a good match for the ranger in terms of total...
Hi Morgan,
I'm on my 3rd 4x4 truck. As others have said, 4x2 is enough most of the time. You will need good ground clearance. Dirt roads can develop deep ruts and you may encounter stream crossings or exposed rocks in the road where the dirt eroded away. You should have at least 8 inches...
A Ford-branded Retrax bed cover came with my XLT with 6' bed. I recently got a camper shell and no longer need the 6-month-old tonneau cover. I never had a problem with leaks. It has T-slots in the side rails for a rack or other accessories. A 5' bed would require shorter side rails, possibly...
I removed the battery from the fob for my xlt. Unlocking the door starts a countdown to sounding an alarm. Starting the truck stopped the countdown and alarm. It seems likely a key without a fob (or unprogrammed fob) would work as an emergency spare. I've been meaning to get one and try it.
I have an FX4, tires at 30psi. Ride/bounce is comparable to my previous 2000 Tacoma. Maybe I'm just used to it but driving over speed bumps the bounce seems similar to what I see in cars ahead of me. I'm quite happy with the off-road handling.
Hi All,
I have a new LXT, FX4 on the way. My previous 4wd vehicles had manual everything and it was easy to check operation of the front hubs, transfer case, etc. Any suggestions for things to check on a new FX4?
Thanks for the details. I just got a Ranger and am exploring camper options. All Terrain Campers https://www.allterraincampers.com/ says they have shells as light as 500 lbs. and Four Wheel says they are planning lighter campers. What did you do about the backup camera?
Hi All,
Very happy to have found this forum. I've been looking seriously at the new Ranger, largely because of the high payload capacity. While looking underneath several 4x4 Rangers on dealer lots, I saw what looks and feels like rust on several components between the front differential and...
