Old thread, but I'm currently on a similar search, but decided to go the pop-up route.
There was a video or thread where they showed how much of a hit in gas mileage with it over the cab.
A pop-up can be kept down and only pop-up'd when needed.
Even the homemade ones pop-up in minutes.
Old thread, but I was searching this very topic. I was thinking of having a second camera mounted on the camper and just unplug the tailgate one and plug in the new compatible one.

I went there to order an aluminum ARE, but they talked me into this one. Royell or Royale or something like that.
I was originally going to get a classy fiberglass one with the rise in the roof. But I decided to save money. And this way it'll be easier to take off and put back on being it's a lot lighter than fiberglass.
Just happened to me today. At a certain point of the door being opened it actually felt like it swung itself the rest of the way open by itself. Argh! Not to mention the metal on these rangers is the thinnest I've ever seen.
