Yes it needs airflow, but low and near the hot tarmac it is the least valuable air flow because it is hot already and that intercooler behind it needs protection. Even with just normal driving it for a few months, I had some rock dings back in there. Covered it with a Putco Insert.

So it looks like your skid plate skidded. I'm not seeing the issue here? It is there to "take one for the team." That doesn't mean it looks factory fresh all nice and cherry when it's done doing it's job. I'd say your plate is fine. Did it's job like it should and has lots of life left in it.
