Rub a bar of soap against both sides of the belt area and the plastic. Slowly work the belt up and down making sure not to let the belt continue to fold over itself.

If you don't know, the cover is more of a foam material and not plastic. In another thread someone already went through a lot of trouble to paint his and it didn't turn out well. I'll see if I can find the post for you. Here
