I think you are expecting way to much from this system.
The much more sophisticated self driving systems are running over pedestrians and rear ending stopped semis.
You would hope that if they used the technology they would use software that would stop the auto driving if the operators eyes were not looking forward or undetected. You know reading, sleeping, in the back seat...
