That's literally not correct. Aluminum has good tensile strength, please explain where a diff cover experiences tensile forces. You think a silly diff cover is forged? Cast iron can have better elastic and shear strength, which is exactly what a supporting structure of the diff housing...

Right at 62" it would have play wihtout the foam, which holds it firmly in place. I didn't think to measure the height but a 2x8 or wider would work too

Cast iron has a much higher elastic strength than aluminum, which is exactly what you want for protection in a diff cover for hitting boulders to protect against denting in and hitting the gears, or reinforcing the diff housing itself.
Backflip MX4 looks very similar to my Gator FX. The shims provided were a dense rubber that I stuff up in between the plastic and the bed for the middle clamp. In the end it installed straight and seems solid enough... I also had a lot of trouble with the clamps and I think I need to replace...
