After a bit more digging, it seems the Ranger frame is identical to the previous gen F150 (2015-2020) "light duty" frame.
It seems the last gen F150 had a slightly more robust frame, across all three variants. Not a fan of the lower quality steel / lesser gauge used on the 2021+ models...
Hey all,
After spending a week in a Tacoma rental and looking under a friend's Colorado, I'm amazed at how much beefier the Ranger frame rails seem. Visually, the Ranger frame looks much heavier than any other midsize I've crawled under.
Did some digging and, interestingly, looks like the...
Interesting point about the Maverick...it is only 0.7" narrower than the 5G Ranger. Granted, it is significantly shorter but that's why the bed is only 4.5' long.
I personally find the 5G Ranger to be "just small enough." Other than length (~7" longer), it isn't that much different than the 2011 model. Even though the 5G looks way bigger, most dimensions are within 1-2 inches.
My biggest problem with the 6G ranger is the increased width. Just for...
Forgot to mention - if a SCab is offered and Ford sticks to the same GVWR as the SCrew, this would give some very impressive payload numbers (assuming ~90 lb curb weight difference, as seen on the current generation).
~1900 lbs payload for 4x2 SCab
~1800 lbs payload for 4x4 SCab
That would be...
I realize no one knows for sure, but this Motor Trend article from a couple months ago gives me hope...

"Ford will offer the Ranger as a four-door SuperCrew with 5-foot bed for its initial release. No timeline for the SuperCab...
Certainly possible it is an error. Of note, Ford states the same thing in 2021 F150 literature, specifically regarding payload ratings:
I agee that axle rating is very important and easy to overlook. I suppose a truck scale is your best friend to determine actual loads in that department...
Definitely agree that 100 - 200 lbs over or under the official rating is not going to matter in the real world.
For those curious, the footnote about driver & fuel weight was pulled from this table (which lists payload and towing):
One would assume this applies to all values in the chart...
Thanks for posting this!
Important to note payload just includes "cargo and passengers." I've seen folks state that payload includes everything added to a completely empty truck (i.e. - fuel and driver eat into payload rating).
As noted earlier in the thread - directly from Ford.
So...
Hauled the ATVs ~300 miles. Trailer weight was probably only ~2500 lbs but had ~1000 lbs of payload & people. Very impressed with the way the Ranger handled it - barely noticable. Averaged ~19 MPG. Was impressed with efficiency. Granted, it's a low profile load, but there was a decent amount of...
There was some hesitation at first. Grabbing a long stick and poking under the water told me it wasn't excessively muddy.
I was super impressed with how the Ranger clawed through it. In fact, this is a dead end road, so the truck passed through both ways!
Believe it or not, it was just a road. I never really understood what folks meant by a "corduroy road" until I drove down that .
Ironically, the sign at the beginning even called it a "memorial highway!"
I have always heard that the "max" payloads listed in Ford literature only apply to a given body style without any options. I was referring to the following info:
I would have assumed the absolute maximum payload for a 4x4 Ranger would be 1,650 lbs...as stated by Ford. I'm surprised that an...
From December - in Western Maine.
Some exploration of logging roads the morning after a 12" storm. Had to put diff lock on in a couple places because of ice below the snow. Went ~10 miles in unbroken snow - steepest grade climbed was 13 degrees. Truck handled it great.
