did a DYI, parts from Amazon, total cost under $20.00. tied it into the plug by the driver side rear tire, I added a switch in the bed, but that hot wire is hot when the truck is on and stays hot for about 20 minutes after thetruck is turned off as well.

correct, my running board lights are on when the headlights are on as well, if you want them only on with the puddle lights, then yes you would need to splice into the courtesy lights

actually the side marker lights come on the same time as the puddle lights, do

Yes , just pop out the front marker light (you tube it) and splice into the wires. I ran the wires under the wheel well and down to the running boards

Looks great, i just did my lights, couldn't see paying $90.00 for a light kit so did a DIY with leftover lights from my running board project and some angle brackets from Home Depot, spent about $7.00 and took about an hour and a half from start to finish....
