Sorry to see your truck damaged. Hope you get it fixed up the way you want it.

Sorry to see this, but at least it seems like no one got hurt badly or anything, and it looks repairable on your end.

I'm a little curious, since accidents will happen, how did all of the collision avoidance and other safety-related tech behave? Was there any automatic braking, or did it all happen too fast? If it did automatically brake, do you think it reduced the severity of the crash at all?

Good question, there was no reaction from the truck. I did have a split second to slam on the brakes. Perhaps the truck would have too but I have generally very good reaction times. Otherwise, the truck didn’t do anything. No air bags or anything.

Interesting. I've had one or two times where I needed to hit the brakes pretty quickly, also before the truck did anything on its own. There was one time, however, when it was brand new before I had gotten used to driving it, when I did get the flashing red screen and probably some warning noise that I don't remember, but the automatic braking had not engaged yet by the time I hit the brakes. It must wait pretty long before engaging. If it engages too early, there might be an equal risk of causing an accident.

Good thing you slowed it down to the point where the airbags didn't need to deploy.

To clarify, he was moving across the two westbound lanes as traffic was backed up; those cars left a gap for him. I was in the turn lane traveling westbound. I saw him just as I was about two car lengths from him but he was moving and was still driving through the gap in the cars when I saw him. Likely what happened here is that I saw him and slammed on my brakes slightly before he actually entered my lane so my truck wasn’t able to see the possible collision before I was able to. I’d say the truck will likely only help with rear end situations.

Sorry to hear that. Do you have a dash cam?
I do not. But the guy was very nice and didn’t try to point blame or lie to the cop. The cop told him he was for sure at fault. While yes, I was traveling down a turn lane and not turning into the entrance where the other guy was headed, the cop confirmed that it was legal to do so as it’s a continuous turn lane that runs past three right hand entrances.

I think the steel bumpers help in these instances. I am glad they upgraded to them in the US. Sorry about your accident. Hopefully all the parts are available and you get it back soon

That's a lot more clear. I think you're right. Without a very sophisticated autonomous system like what Tesla or Google have, there are going to be a lot of limits. In the Ranger, while the car was still in the other lane, it may not be sophisticated enough to do all the calculations necessary to determine that it was a collision threat. Like you say, once it entered your lane it might have figured it out, but you were already braking by then. It's pretty much limited to detecting collision threats that are directly ahead.

Check out the new bumper from RPG. Just came out. That damage is nothing but a scratch. Ranger did well.

Funny you say that. I just got off the phone with RPG and they’re working on a quote for me. I’ll see what they come back with.
