Hello all, I’m new here and new to the ranger and wanted to ask about the rangers brakes. Coming from a 1999 Tacoma, the Ranger brakes stink. Though the brakes stop really good, they seem mushy a bit before really pushing on the pedal.

My issue is mushy brakes, but not always. In the morning or if the truck has been sitting for a day or two, the brake pedal feels good, not mushy, but firm like my old Tacoma. When I release the brake pedal, it retracts (brake pedal goes back to the non push down position) slowly with no noise. After been driving a bit, the mushy brake pedal starts and when releasing the brake pedal, it doesn’t slowly retract. Also, at times, when I release the brake pedal, I “feel” like something is releasing, like a faint thud or thump, but doesn’t happen all the time, very inconsistent. This also happens when I come to a stop and truck completely stops, I “feel” the same faint thud or thump. Then it goes away. Drives me crazy and since it’s not an all the time issue, I can’t pin point it, though I’m not a mechanic at all!

I drove slowly in a parking lot with the door open, and noticed a faint grinding noise coming from the rear, possibly, but not sure.

My zero experience on this issue thoughts was telling me it’s the brake booster, but did a test I saw online to test, but seems ok. Then I thought the master cylinder or worn brake pads? I bought the truck used a couple years ago, so I assume the brake pads are ok.

Any thoughts on this? The thud/thump is very inconsistent and doesn’t happen all the time. Like today coming home from work, it didn’t do it. Do Rangers just come with mushy brake pedals? Normal? Thanks

]I have the same faint thud, it's like the autostart is trying to kick in after being disabled. It only happens the first time the brakes are released after stopping. If I apply the brakes again and then release them a second time, it doesn't happen.

The thump when stopping is likely the driveshaft spline needs lubrication. There are other threads on this subject. The mushy brake pedal is likely caused by air in the brake system. Many have bled the brakes and obtained a higher, firmer brake pedal.

Ah ok. It’s going to my local repair shop tomorrow for inspection. I will mention both items you have described. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for your response. I did have the brakes checked out and they were fine. The mechanic at a local shop couldn’t recreate the thump, or he wasn’t really paying attention. Do you know or have an idea on what a mechanic or Ford dealer would charge to grease the slip yolk? I been reading that’s it’s called slip yolk and assume it’s the same as the driveshaft spline? I don’t have access to do this myself.
